The Human Rights in Health and Social Care

Human right in health and social care means that each and every individual has right to attain the highest standard of mental and physical health which consists of access to sanitation, medical services, adequate healthy food, clean environment, and healthy working conditions.  The human right guarantees health protection and it must be provided to all equally and publicly. It states that the clinics, medicines, doctors, hospitals, etc must be accessible, available and acceptable for everyone when and where it is needed.

With the technological advancements and sharing of knowledge, people are able to educate themselves on their own about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. There are various sites like which helps people with regard to health.

The health care system should be designed keeping the following important human rights standards:

Availability- Adequate infrastructure with regard to health care (example -community health facilities, hospitals, trained health care team), goods (example- equipment, drugs, etc) and services (example -mental health, primary care, etc) must be available to all communities in all geographical areas.

Dignity and acceptability-  The health care providers and institutions must provide appropriate care, be responsive to all the needs on the basis of age, culture, gender, language, etc and should respect dignity. They must protect confidentiality and respect medical ethics.

Quality- All health care must be of good quality and medically appropriate. It should be guided by the quality standards and must get certified with concerned regulatory authorities. It should be provided in a safe and timely manner.

Transparency- Health care information should help people in protecting their health. Institutions which organize, deliver or finance health care must always operate in a transparent way.

Non- discrimination- Health care institutions must be accessible without any kind of discrimination on the basis of race, health status, age, sex, ethnicity, disability, sexuality, religion, language, income, national origin or social status.
